As Difficult A “Pick Three” at Caledonia as You Will Find

Any of these holes could be considered one of the course’s three best

At a course as beautiful and extraordinary as Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, picking three holes that stand out can be a real challenge, because each and every one presents distinct design features and a stunning Lowcountry backdrop, leaving a lasting impression on all who visit to play. After checking out this list below, be sure to book a round at Caledonia on the Hammock Coast Golf Trail and compare your own top three to these:

The par-4 seventh at Caledonia measures 399 yards (all figures back tees) and is an often-overlooked favorite hole. Players must carry water on the drive and avoid sand on the left and a large oak tree on the right, meaning accuracy off the tee is vital. Throw in the largest green on the course, and the seventh hole creates myriad challenges.

No. 13 (shown above) is a 398-yard par 4 and, once again, Caledonia’s signature live oak trees come into play. Thirteen is a true dogleg left — a perfect right angle — with a large oak tree sitting at the corner of the dogleg. It also has the smallest green on the course and it’s nearly surrounded by sand, so the farther you are from the hole, the more difficult the approach becomes. The specter of the oak tree at the corner brings an element of risk to hugging the left side, as the closer you challenge the oak tree from the tee, the shorter approach you will have.

As with so many of his courses, Caledonia designer Mike Strantz crafted a truly magnificent finishing hole. No. 18 is a 383-yard par 4 that plays toward the antebellum-style clubhouse. It’s one of the Grand Strand’s most popular holes because nearly everyone that plays the course retires to the clubhouse and watches fellow players finish the 18th, creating a unique atmosphere that adds to the fun. Your drive here only needs to be 225 yards, leaving 150 yards over water and into a diagonal green that is 55 yards deep. The real challenge is trying to ignore all the people on the porch watching. It’s a great hole to end the day on.

Every hole at Caledonia is superb. Play it for yourself and see what it’s all about!
