Three Great Holes at the Gary Player Design
A notable south end facility in Murrells Inlet, S.C., Blackmoor Golf Club was designed by Gary Player and opened its doors in 1990. Without a doubt, Blackmoor is one of Player’s gems and is the only course he designed in the area, making for a truly unique experience that captures both Player’s imagination for design as well as his unparalleled sense of style.
Here are three spotlight holes you can expect will provide challenge and fun when you play Blackmoor during your upcoming trip on the Hammock Coast Golf Trail:
The first of Blackmoor’s iconic doglegs, the par-4 5th challenges players by daring them to cut the corner but rewards intelligent play. The landing area off the tee is narrow and a clear path to the green is difficult to find. Consider playing to the elbow of the dogleg, which will offer a mid-iron into the long, narrow green. Also keep in mind that the green is open in the front once you’ve made it around the dogleg, providing the opportunity to bump and run the ball when the pin is accessible.
The course’s most creative hole is the split-fairway, par-4 8th, which forces players to decide between hitting their ball through a narrow tree-lined shoot to the right (giving them a chance to go for the green) or to lay up safely on the wide-open fairway to the left. The alley to the right is approximately 30 yards wide with woods on the left and a hazard on the right. Still, you don’t have to carry the ball 270 yards for the gamble to be a success. Normal rough is the only penalty for coming up short, assuming you hit it straight. But you must hit it straight! If you don’t, it’s a big number for sure.
The par-5 18th is a memorable closing hole. Long hitters will have the opportunity to go for the green in two, but it’s a classic risk-reward decision. The fairway narrows considerably near the green and a water hazard awaits shots that drift to the right. Even for players going for the green in regulation, the third shot can be daunting, as right of the pin is rarely ever good here. At the same time, if you can land the ball on the left side of the green or just before the green to the left, the ball will funnel toward the hole. Plenty of players’ first eagles have occurred here. What a way to end your round!
