Course Spotlight: The Heritage Club

When playing along the Hammock Coast Golf Trail you will see some of the more unique designs from some of the biggest names in golf course design, including the Gary Player-designed Blackmoor Golf Club, Jack Nicklaus signature design Pawleys Plantation, and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, designed by the late, great Mike Strantz.

Dan Maples is prominent in his own right, having designed multiple courses along the Grand Strand including The Heritage Club.

Maples’ Lowcountry design sits on the True Blue and Midway Plantation where they have cut The Heritage Club through freshwater lakes and marshlands. The front nine at Heritage will have you winding your way through dense forest areas. On the front nine your ability to hit fairways and scramble around the greens will be put to the test. The back nine at Heritage is where players begin to encounter the bulk of the design’s freshwater lakes and marsh. Ball striking will be the key here.

When you play The Heritage Club you’re presented with a competitive array of tees from which to play. If you’re a better player looking for the stiffest challenge you can stretch it out as far as 7,118 yards from the tips, or if you’re looking for a bit more relaxation you can play from the white tees that play to 6,310 yards.

One of the signature holes on the front nine is the par-4 9th Hole. The 9th, from the blue tees, measures 336 yards and gives players the chance to card a birdie before the turn. In order to get close to the green players must manufacture a cut off the tee to find the fairway. A good tee shot will leave just a wedge into the green.

One of the most famous holes on the back nine at The Heritage Club is the 13th Hole (pictured, above). This par 3 stretches over water to a peninsula green that is guarded by the lake around front and some bunkers on the left side. From the blue tees it will play 200 yards but from the white tees it will measure a more manageable 175 yards. To make a 3 on this hole we suggest going for the middle of the green every time.
