Tom Fazio has designed and built some of the nation’s most famous golf courses, from Conway Farms Golf Club to Pinehurst No. 8 and many, many more. We’re grateful that Fazio brought his magic to the Hammock Coast Golf Trail as well, with his highly renowned design at TPC Myrtle Beach.
Host of the 2000 Senior TOUR Championship and the home course of current World No. 1 Dustin Johnson during his college days at Coastal Carolina, TPC Myrtle Beach has earned its fair share of accolades over the years – and with good reason. With undulating greens, large bunkers and the occasional water hazard, TPC Myrtle Beach will test players of all skill levels who come to challenge it. The course offers the choice of five separate tee boxes; lower handicappers can challenge themselves from the blue tees (6,950 yards), and the average recreational golfer can get some yardage relief from the white markers (6,193 yards).
The 9th hole at TPC Myrtle Beach is ranked as the toughest hole on the golf course, and when you stand on the tee you quickly realize why. This 457-yard (blue tees) par four plays straight uphill. The easiest part of the hole is the tee shot, but you can’t miss right or else you’ll be going for a swim. With hardly any room to run the ball onto the green, players must fly it there while avoiding a deep greenside bunker. This green gives the greenskeeper the option to hide the pin on the back tier of the green behind the bunker. If players can make a four here, they will be having a good day.
The finishing hole is a par five that is dissected by a creek that initially runs up the right side of the fairway. That creek eventually turns into a pond that then runs along the left side of the second part of the fairway. Players must avoid these hazards, as well as the multiple fairway bunkers and greenside bunkers that line the right side of the fairway. If you end up in one of those bunkers, you need to keep your ensuing shots from then going left and ending up in the drink.
