It’s one of the more tantalizing “risk/reward” holes in all of Myrtle Beach golf. And if you master it, you’ll be feeling as regal as The Black Knight himself.

The 8th Hole at Blackmoor Golf Club, the lone area signature design of the legendary Gary Player, is a par 4 that plays to a modest 370 yards when you play it the conventional way. In this scenario, it’s the left side of a split fairway that plays as a dogleg right. Hit an accurate tee shot to the elbow of the dogleg and you’re left with a short iron approach to a large green. Get it there safely, and a good birdie chance awaits while par remains a satisfying fallback.

You can throw caution to the wind and go for the green off the tee through the hole’s “shortcut.” But No. 8’s shortcut doesn’t go over the trees; it cuts right through them with an alley that’s only 30 yards wide, and covered in rough. Miss right or left, and even a chip-out from there is risky business. If you hit it straight but short, pray that the rough is low enough to still give you a decent chance of reaching the green in regulation.

But that large green only sits 270 yards away through the chute. And if you’re a longer hitter and can land your drive anywhere on that large putting surface, your reward is the ever-elusive shot for eagle that keeps everyday golfers coming back for more.

No one will fault you for taking the conservative route on Blackmoor No. 8. But imagine the stories you’ll have for your family and friends if you take a chance here.
