International Competition Meets Lowcountry Experience at the World Am

Hammock Coast Golf Trail courses included among this year’s host sites

The PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur is the largest, most fun golf tournament on the planet. Entering its 37th year, the “World Am,” set to take place Aug. 31-Sept. 4, 2020, boasts 72 holes of net, stroke play with more than 3,200 golfers competing on nearly 60 of Myrtle Beach’s best golf courses. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you’ll get to compete on several Hammock Coast Golf Trail courses during the tournament. That’s because all 12 Trail sites play host. Here’s a spotlight of five world-class Trail designs you might get to play, each one displaying that distinct mix of championship golf and Lowcountry charm the Trail has become known for.

Built on the site of a historically significant rice plantation, Caledonia Golf & Fish Club has received extraordinary praise for its combination of creativity and conditioning, marked by enormous greens, decisive bunkering and natural elements like marsh, live oaks and an array of seasonal flowers in full bloom.

Willbrook Plantation Golf Club embraces the rich history of the South Carolina coast as well, with numerous placards stationed throughout the course telling a unique story of two rice plantations that date back to 1776, and upon which the course now lies. Meanwhile, the layout is challenging, highly creative and forces players to hit every shot in the bag.

The Heritage Club is carved through what once was another historic Lowcountry plantation. Its layout requires creativity and shot making to be successful. Centuries-old pines and oaks, luscious crepe myrtle, camellias and azaleas line wide fairways and greens that undulate as much as any in the area, while marsh and numerous water hazards require frequent forced carries.

A recent renovation restored the natural sandy areas throughout the Founders Club at Pawleys Island, creating beautifully framed visuals set amongst tall, long-leaf pines and sprawling oaks. In addition, subtle mounding and Founders Club’s natural topography create stunning shadowing throughout the course, especially in the early morning and late afternoon.

Finally, TPC Myrtle Beach presents a challenging layout that offers everything players look for: picturesque holes from tee to green, meticulously shaped hills and mounding, perfectly conditioned greens and an abundance of native wildlife. Be ready for a real challenge at TPC, where tall southern pines, rustic wetlands and demanding par 3s require frequent forced carries.
