Previewing the 2020 Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship at TPC Myrtle Beach
Planning to play golf on the Hammock Coast Golf Trail at the end of this month? Well, be aware that the 5th Annual Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship will be taking place Feb. 28-March 1 (Remember, 2020 is a leap year). It’s open to the public and totally free for spectators to attend, making it a phenomenal opportunity to watch some truly world-class golf during your upcoming getaway.
The Dustin Johnson World Junior is held at TPC Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, one of 12 courses on the Trail, and features many of the game’s very best junior golfers, both boys and girls, ages 13-18. This year, 90 players from around the world will compete in a 54-hole tournament that, for the winners, will leave them well-positioned to move forward in their pursuit of future glory at the college and professional levels.
Last year, top-ranked boys junior golfer Akshay Bhatia took home the Championship in what would be one of the final junior events of his amateur career. Since then, Bhatia went on to compete for Team USA in its victorious 2019 Walker Cup performance, and then turned professional in his current quest to earn his PGA TOUR card. Girls’ division phenom Alexa Pano successfully defended her 2018 championship, and returns in her quest for a three-peat. The boys’ 2018 champion, Michael Brennan, is committed to play collegiately next year at the storied Wake Forest program, and returns this year in search of his second Dustin Johnson World Junior title.
With the support of Johnson, the former No. 1 ranked player in the world for more than two years, the tournament provides participants a PGA TOUR-like experience and the chance to test themselves against a genuinely global field. Past fields have represented as many as 35 states and 12 countries, and this year’s edition is sure to bring the same sort of worldwide contingent.
From the southern hospitality and brilliant layout of TPC Myrtle Beach to the championship-level pressure and competition, the Dustin Johnson World Junior is a unique, fun way to watch the future of the game play a golf course that challenges them to be at their very best. The odds favor many of these boys and girls someday ascending to the game’s highest professional ranks, and you’ll be able to say you saw them right at the very launch of their careers. What could be cooler than that?
